BIG, known for their “hedonistic and sustainable” architectural designs, are one of the most prominent architecture firms today. This kickstarter is aimed at sourcing help from the masses to fund the steam ring generator of the Amager Resource Center, which is currently under construction. Learn more about the building and the kickstarter fund after the break.

From the architect: The waste-to-energy plant, Amager Resource Center, is located in an industrial area, that throughout the years, has turned into an extreme sport destination for thrill seekers. Different extreme sports activities take place in the raw industrial facilities such as cable wake boarding, go-kart racing, and rock climbing among others. The Amager Resource Center is the most significant landmark in the area and the building is in need of renewal. We propose a new breed of waste-to-energy plant, one that is economically, environmentally, and socially profitable. Instead of considering Amager Resource Center as an isolated object, we mobilize the architecture and intensify the relationship between the building and the city—expanding the existing activities in the area by turning the roof of the new Amager Resource Center into a ski slope for the citizens of Copenhagen. The new plant establishes Amager Resource Center as an innovator on an urban scale, redefining the relationship between the waste plant and the city. It will be both iconic and integrated, a destination in itself, and a reflection on the progressive vision of the company.

By 2017 the citizens of Copenhagen will not only be able to ski down the cleanest power plant in the world – their perceptions of what a power plant can be will be challenged by an art piece that raises awareness of our carbon emissions. The world’s first steam ring generator will puff out a steam ring for every ton of CO2 burned in the plant. Help us turn fiction into fact!

By sweeping nothing under the carpet, but rather projecting our carbon footprint onto the Copenhagen sky, we provide every single citizen intuitive information to help them inform the decisions they make for their lives and for the city that they want to live in.

  1. “every ton of CO2 burned in the plant”
CO2 can’t be burned (with oxygen). Well it can be “burned” but only with an oxidiser stronger than oxygen, which leaves fluorine as the only option. When CO2 is burned with fluorine it produces carbon tetrafluoride which is 6500 times worse as a greenhouse gas than CO2. Nice one!
