Finn’s Thoughts: What a treat. If the rest of the offerings from Glen Moray are like this, then the whole family will be moving onto my shelf. Arguably, a bigger influence than taste preference when diving into the world of scotch/single malt is price point (age statement rounds out the trio). The assumption is that good and great scotch will usually be on the more expensive end. Somewhat true, that often means people disregard the affordable… very affordable offerings that are just marinating on shelves. So I decided to try one, and staying true to form I selected one with an additive finish. Surprise, surprise! This is some interesting shit! This is a complex dram that is light and approachable but somehow well layered. All the intrigue though is at the front end where all the flavors dance a choreographed number then suddenly it completely mellows out and vanishes, like the curtain dropped before the routine was done. No burn, just a little whisky heat and an invitation to want to try again just to make sure you’re not crazy. Oh, I enjoyed this and will be getting more from this distillery. If you want people to experience whisky that is interesting but don’t want to offer the expensive stuff, give them this. Though they might feel comfortable asking for the expensive stuff next.
